HD Tune: Check your hard drive health

leave a comment »

HD Tune is a great tool for checking the general health of your hard drive.  Its reading the S.M.A.R.T. data off your hard disk and displays it in a table format.  You can use it with internal or external IDE (ATA/PATA) or SATA hard disks. It also works for hard disks plugged in via USB.

S.M.A.R.T. parameters has a threshold, beyond which it could indicate a drive starting to fail.  If HD Tune determines potential problems, it will highlight that row in the results table.

It shows you such information about your disk as temperature, which can be a good indication about whether your computer system is running too hot.

Go to Error Scan to test the surface of your disk and look for so called bad sectors. If HD Tune finds any, it will mark broken blocks in red. Data on a bad sectors cannot be red or written so basically hard disk need a replacement.
